CERNET2, Core Network of CNGI launch events and the celebration of 10th anniversary of CERNET were co-held on 25th December, 2005.

On the time of 10th Anniversary of CERNET, CERNET2, core network of China Next Generation Internet Demonstration Project CNGI was opened on 25th December, 2005. The network construction was taken charge by Tsinghua University and operated by 25 collaborative top universities.

Ministry of Education of China (MoE) presided over the celebration, almost 1500  attendees joined the event, including the leaders of National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information Industry, State Council Information Office, Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and experts and delegates coming from the main education management branches of provinces and cities.

XU Qin, the director of High-tech Department of National Development and Reform Commission, and WU Hequan, Vice Dean of Chinese Academy of Engineering pressed the opening button of CERNET2. Since then, CERNET2, the native IPv6 network stands before the whole new world, and it adopts 70 percent home-made network equipments, connects 25 key universities distributed 20 main cities, and the transmission rate is high up to 10G.

CERNET2 is the largest core network and the only academic network in the project of China Next Generation Internet Demonstration Project CNGI, which is approved by the State Council and organized jointly by eight ministries and commissions including National Development and Reform Commission. CNGI-CERNET2 is also so far the world’s largest native IPv6 backbone.

CERNET2 will be the fundamental infrastructure for China’s scientific and techniques innovation, and also the most important infrastructure for advanced network technologies and the killer applications of the next generation Internet.
