People's Daily Editorial Calls for Efforts to Enhance Ideological and Political Education among University Students
2004-10-18

People's Daily will publish an editorial Saturday, calling for redoubled efforts to enhance ideological and political education among university students.

The editorial, titled "Further Strengthen and Improve the Ideological and Political Education among University Students," echoes a newly-issued document in this regard by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council.

The document is a guide for "improving ideological and political quality" and "pushing forward the overall development of college students," the editorial says.

It says that university students are facing both favorable conditions and austere challenges as profound changes are taking place in China and the world. It is a great and imperative strategic task to strengthen and improve the ideological and political education among university students.

According to the editorial, China has about 20 million university students. It calls for efforts to foster qualified socialist "builders and successors" who are well-trained in all the fields of "moral, intelligence, sports and arts."
