A "high temperature magnetic levitation train" which can carry as much as 500 kilograms of cargo or five people, has been developed by Southwest Communications University in Sichuan's Chengdu on December 31, 2000.
The "maglev" train will operate at -196.16 C, 77 C above absolute zero, or -273.16 C, for six hours. The maglev train ran on a 15.5-metre-long magnetic rail in an experiment, and a report from Xinhua News Agency described the trial operation as stable and quiet. It is China's first maglev train to run at -196.16 C and carry 500 kilograms of cargo. Relatively higher rail temperatures on maglev trains mean reduced costs. Wang Jiasu, a leading expert in the project, was quoted by Xinhua as saying that the success of the high-temperature maglev train trial shows that China has mastered the world's most advanced technology for maglev trains. |
