The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is in the process of building its computerized information and management network. The CASS has planned to complete the project in the coming five years, according to the CASS development plan between 2001 and 2005. The CASS will continuously upgrade its servers and web-related hardware. A digital library will also be in place in 2002. Meanwhile, the CASS management body will run the academy by supervising a proposed computerized management system. The CASS has specially organized a coordination team consisting of web specialists and leading social scientists. All its staff should be trained on how to use the World Wide Web and other computer programs. National Research Center in Social Sciences According to its development program between 2001 and 2005, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) will expand the construction of its headquarters on the east end of Beijing's main thoroughfare, Chang'an Street. The proposed new center will cover a floor space of 43,600 square meters. A new office building for visiting researchers and a 150,000-square meter research building will have been completed by 2005. Lack of research funds and other material resources have greatly limited the continued development of the nation's top think tank, said Chen Jiagui, vice president of the CASS. In a bid to fulfill its construction project, CASS is trying to find more funds from both the government and the private sector, said Chen. |
