China allocated monetary awards to a number of scientists and technicians for their great contributions to the country's national economy and social progress, according to a circular issued Monday by China's State Council. Wu Wenjun, a Chinese mathematician, and Yuan Longping, a leading hybrid-rice expert, respectively won 5 million yuan State Supreme Science and Technology Award of the Year 2000 here this morning. This is China's first State Supreme Science and Technology Award. The award will be granted to no more than two outstanding scientists annually. Besides hundreds of winners of Class-one or Class-two Prize for State Scientific and Technological Progress, China also awarded one American scientist and one Indian scientist for their cooperation with their Chinese counterparts. The circular urged China's scientists and technicians to play greater roles in promoting the country's social progress and modernization drive. |
