2001-01-01

In the past four years, China has artificially bred 66 pandas, with 52 surviving, according to yesterday's People's Daily.

China has overcome three main hurdles in raising pandas - matching, pregnancy and feeding, thanks to the efforts by the State Forestry Administration (SFA) in devotion to the research on physiology and pathology of pandas.

"In the past five years, the forestry administration has established 321 more nature reserves. The total 909 reserves in China covers an area of 100 million hectares," said Zhou Shengxian, director of the SFA.

China has created miracles in saving animals and plants from extinction. The number of Yangtze alligator has grown from 200 to over 9,000 over the past ten years thanks to artificial-breeding skill. Progress was also made in artificial breeding of Northeast Tiger and golden monkey.
