August 30 to 31 will see Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province host the 10th strategic conference of Human Genome Project (HGP), according to peopledaily.com.cn. This conference is the highest-level meeting for coordinating the international HGP. In 1999, China was accepted for the first time to join in this project at the fifth conference held in London. By June 2000, China had completed the "working draft" of the human genome, the "part of human genome diagram" for China to work on and participated in the paper writing of human genome. According to Yang Huanming, person in charge of the HGP in the Chinese Academy of Science, those who are going to attend the conference will be major leaders of international HGP including Francis Collins, general coordinator of international human genome project as well as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute of the United States, and principals of 16 research centers of six member countries of the project. At the coming conference stress for discussion will be laid on the drawing of the "final diagram" of human genome, the plan and other issues of strategic importance to decide the orientation in the development of HGP in future. China, through its participation in this project, has trained its own research personnel of genome, said Yang and established the six largest technologic platform in the world, thereby laying a solid foundation for the development of China's life science in the 21st century. |
