The attack of the computer worm known as Code Red II has appeared in more than 20 Chinese provinces and municipalities, People's Daily reported Friday. According to the newspaper, numerous Internet services crashed because of the Code Red II's attack on servers in these regions, including net services operated by a number of state ministries. Transmission of e-mail on some Internet portals is noticeably slower, and some have canceled service for 24 hours, said the newspaper. In terms of damage, Code Red has outstripped the CIH computer worm and is by far the worst computer virus to affect the Chinese mainland, the newspaper quoted Wu Jianping, an executive with China Educational and Scientific Research Net. The Chinese Ministry of Security has issued a nationwide warning urging different localities to be well prepared and take effective countermeasures against Code Red II. Code Red II worm is a program that rapidly scans for vulnerable computers to infect and overload. It can also quickly contaminates those computers linked to the initially infected computer. |
