Joint Venture of Magnesium Production in NW China
2001-11-28

A production line of magnesium has been recently set up here in Yinchuan, capital of northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. A Sino-American joint venture, it is the biggest of its kind in the region.

The joint venture is planning to buy small-scale magnesium plants across the region. The total output is expected to reach 5,000 tons next year after its second phase construction completed. It expects to earn 9 million U.S. dollars a year, as 90 percent ofits product will sell to the United States.

The region boasts of abundant resources of dolomite, ferrosilicium and coal, all raw materials for alloying magnesium. However, due to lack of capital and technology, the manufacturing of the metal that is in large demand in international market has lagged behind.

Insiders of the industry believe that the production line will greatly upgrade the related technology in the northwestern region.
