2001-11-29

The Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park, dubbed as China's Silicon Valley, is carrying outthe first human resource survey of its IT industry, to get a clearpicture of the area's talent.

According to Wednesday's China Daily, some 240,000 employees from 3,500 IT companies are expected to be surveyed on their work and social lives, education background and living conditions.

Forerunner in Chinese IT industry, the park in northwestern Beijing is the most intensive area of intellectual resources and human resources around the country.

The first comprehensive survey since Zhongguancun was founded in 1998 was initiated on the basis that qualified personnel are the most valuable resource for IT companies, Liu Zhishuo, general planner of the survey, was quoted as saying.

Managers and staff members have expressed lack of communicationas a problem in the park and hoped the survey will help air their views and open up channel between companies, workers and the government.

Shortage of funds, long hours, high rent for office buildings and few channels to benefit from governmental policies are the major complains from many managers.

However, the staff members are mainly concerned about job cuts, stiff competition, training opportunities and buying houses and cars.

Those who travel from outside the capital to work here called for the municipal government to reduce the negative impacts for their not having registered residence.

According to the survey conductors, some human resource managers complained that their companies lacked "blue-collar" software workers, willing to engross themselves in basic writing and operating programs.
