More than one million people took part in the two major on-line competitions by accessing the NCAC website. Well-known overseas and local businesses joined with the local administrations to host different contests for players at different levels. The "Microsoft SQL Server 2000" contest and the "Microsoft Manager" contest were designed to test professional computer personnel and professional managers, respectively. A senior official with the DIP said that Microsoft offered three days of training for the finalists to help the contestants. A Microsoft spokesperson said that in China there have been big developments in the information industry which has a huge potential which has attracted the attention of the world's leading companies. The organizing committee said that the visitors to the NCAC website mainly came from big cities in better-off areas, a big contrast to the number from west China. Competitors were mostly college and middle school students under 25 years' old, showing that long-term efforts should be made to promote the information industry nationwide. As many as five million visits were made to the NCAC website, and 400 members of the media reported the contest. |
