China Starts Work of Preventing Geological Disasters in ThreeGorges Area
2001-12-31
The work of preventing geological disasters in the Three Gorges area, where a massive power project is being built, has started, the vice mayor of Chongqing Municipality said here Saturday.

Gan Yuping told a news conference that a total investment of more than 3 billion yuan (361 million U.S. dollars) has been allocated for the work.

An investigation carried out by the Yangtze River Water Resources Committee in July this year shows that 1,302 zones along the Three Gorges have hidden geological dangers, such as landslides.

There are 202 such zones in Yichang, with a total landslide area of 23.1 square kilometers, the investigation shows.

The plans by the Ministry of Land and Resources for the prevention and treatment of geological disasters in the area will guarantee the safety of the Three Gorges Power Project, a multi-purpose water conservation project on the Yangtze River, from this year until 2003.
