China To Trial Sulfur Dioxide Quota
2002-06-04
The State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) is to introduce a sulfur dioxide quota in seven provinces or cities in China.

Sources with SEPA said the practice aimed to encourage industries to reduce their emissions with the use of advanced technology.

When an industry exceeds its quota, it will have to buy some from its counterparts or the market. However, SEPA has the final say on total amounts.

The seven trial provinces and cities are Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Henan, Shanghai, Tianjin and Liuzhou.
