90-year-old Academician Won 1 Million Prize

June 1 saw the Fourth Guanghua Engineering Award announced in Beijing, with altogether 19 experts to get in the awards.

Zhang Guangdou, a 90-year-old academician from Tsinghua University, won the "Achievement Award" and a prix of RMB 1million yuan, the first and the highest of its kind in China for honoring the scientist who has made great achievement in engineering. Liu Baicheng, professor from Tsinghua University and other 12 scientists won the "Guanghua Award" of RMB 150,000 yuan for each, and other five scientists won the "Youth Award" with RMB 100,000 yuan for each.

Song Jian, Qian Zhengying, and Zhu Guangya, vice-chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee awarded medals for the winners in the Great Hall of the People on June 1. As reported, a total of 55 scientists have won the honors since the first Guanghua Award was launched in 1996.

In addition, the Chinese Academy (CAS) of Sciences released the list of 7 new-elected foreign academicians, making the number of foreign academicians to reach 41 in CAS.
