Shenzhen Plans Heavy Investment in IT Industry

     Officials from Shenzhen's planning bureau said the city would invest 27.2 billion yuan (3.28billion U.S. dollars) in 19 major IT projects in the 2001-2005 period, covering integrated circuits (IC), software, mobile communications, computers and computer networks, and digital audioand video products.

  When these projects are put into operation, the southern Chinese city could expect an annual IT output value of 389.5 billion yuan (46.93 billion U.S. dollars), according to the officials.

  The officials said that IC would be the focus of the investment.Some 15.3 billion yuan (1.84 billion U.S. dollars) would be invested in six major projects in this sector, including processing 8-inch 0.35-micron, 6-inch 0.35-micron and RSA encrypted chips.

  Shenzhen is one of China's five special economic zones. The city is home to a number of China's heavyweight IT enterprises, including Shenzhen State Micro-Electronics Co.Ltd., Huawei Integrated Circuit Design Center, Shenzhen ZTETC Design Co.Ltd. and Shenzhen ASIC Micro-Electronics Co.Ltd.
