Macao Begins Building New Power Plant
2002-02-01
An environment-friendly power plant has begun being built in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to address the tipped growth of electricity power demand in the coming decade, estimating to cost 1.2 billion patacas (150 million U.S. dollars).

The B Power Plant will sit on at a patch of land reclaimed from the sea on the Coloane Island beside the A Power Plant of the Macao Electricity Co. Ltd.(CEM).

The new plant will be capable of adding 136 megawatts of electricity power, or a 38 percent growth in Macao's total power supply, to the SAR when it takes shape in March, 2003 as scheduled.

The CEM authorities said that in addition to retaining high efficiency and stability in operation, the new plant will be built into an environment-friendly one that lowers to the minimum its impact on neighboring environment, which includes the Macao International Airport.

To reach the goal, the CEM will apply advanced recycling technology to timely reduce waste and a large incinerator to handle the final waste and impose a strict system on environment protection at the plant, anticipating the procurement of the ISO14000 certificate prior to 2004.

An aggregate 129,360 working hours are planned for construction of the plant in 2002, which will help reduce unemployment in the SAR.

At present, the CEM will continue to purchase electricity powerfrom the country's interior, authorities said.
