El Nino, an abnormal climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean, is likely to occur in April or May this year, after nearly four years of absence, warned China's national center for oceanographic forecasting on Thursday. The prediction was based on surveys of the Pacific ocean and solar movements, said Song Xuejia, a scientist at the center, and warned that El Nino may occur three times from now to 2008. El Nino occurs at intervals of several years, bringing drought and fires to some parts of the globe and heavier rainfall to others. It has occurred 13 times since the 1950s, with occurrences in 1982 and 1997 bringing the worst disasters, causing grave economic losses to many countries. |
