China Unicom's GSM Users More Than Double in 2001

| China Unicom Ltd., China's second-largest mobile phone operator, reported Thursday that its GSM subscribers increased by 14.262 million, or 111.7 percent, to 27.033 million, in 2001.
Among the 27.033 million subscribers, 10.544 million were pre-paid ones. For 2001, the aggregated usage volume of outgoing calls of circuit switched long distance telephone was 2.72 billion minutes.The aggregated usage volume of outgoing calls of IP telephony was 3.69 billion minutes. It has 3.4 million Internet users and 32.9 million of pager users as of December 31, 2001. China Unicom, one of the 33 blue-chip companies on the Hong Kong stock market, fell 1.3 percent to close at 7.50 HK dollars Thursday, having shed 12.8 percent since the start of this year. |
