DOMESTIC and overseas subscribers to China Education and Research Network (CERNET) will see the cost of linking up to the network cut by half with immediate effect, the Ministry of the Information Industry (MII) announced yesterday. The move is aimed at encouraging more scholars and education departments and institutions to link up to Cernet, said MII official Zhang Xiaotie at a press conference yesterday in Beijing. Cernet ( established in 1994 )is one of China's four major Internet-based networks. It links 500 higher education and scientific research institutions in 80 cities. The network has helped to promote academic exchanges between domestic and overseas institutions, said Zhang. But the high cost of subscribing has put off a number of potential users, he said. He called on regional telecommunications enterprises and administrations to provide qualified services for Cernet users under the new price regime. Education and research networks in developed countries, which offer discounts to students, have become important in training talents. | ||||
