New Xi'an Jiaotong University Founded

A merger of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics and Xi'an Medical University formerly under the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of public Health and People's Bank of China respectively was announced as new Xi'an Jiaotong University on April 17.

New Xi'an Jiaotong University will be run on a scale with more than 10 subject categories including science, engineer, management literature, medical and others along with 64 bachelor, 53 doctor and 110 master degrees specialties and a student body of 23757 undergraduates and 4479 postgraduates. The new Xi'an Jiaotong University will not change its status under the Ministry of Education. Wang Wensheng, former secretary of former CPC Xi'an Jiaotong University Party Committee still stays on the same post of the new university. Xu Tongmo, former president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, has been appointed to the presidency of the new university.

At the meeting marking the merger of the three universities, Lu Fuyuan, vice minister of the MOE said the merger of the three universities is out of the need for carrying out reform and a restructuring of higher education to meet the demand for China's western development. According to Lu, the merger will help in an optimal reallocation of the country's education resources and the effort to speedily build the university into one to be run at a high world advanced level.
