Three universities in east China's Shandong Province merged and formed the New Shandong University Saturday. The new university was set up by merging Shandong University, Shandong Medical Sciences University and Shandong Engineering University. The university now has more than 35,000 faculty members and students, including 718 professors. Zhan Tao, 37, has been appointed president of the New Shandong University. This merger, part of the nationwide reform of the educational system, is expected to enhance the functions of Chinese universities by making the most of the advantages of different higher-educational institutions, according to officials at the Ministry of Education. In recent years, China has merged a number of universities to make them more competitive. |
