Shanghai Universities Merge to Become More Competitive

The new Fudan and Tongji universities have been created with Wang Shenghong and Wu Qidi as their presidents, respectively, Minister of Education Chen Zhili announced on April 27. The Shanghai Medical Sciences University (SMSU) was merged into the new Fudan, and the Shanghai Railway University (SRU) into the new Tongji. This merger, part of the nationwide reform of the educational system, is expected to enhance Chinese universities by taking advantages of different higher-educational institutions, said officials with the Ministry of Education. Chen said this action will be a model for other higher- educational institutions to further their structural reforms and improvements. |
