Five Universities Merge in Northeast China

The new Jilin University was set up in northeast China's Jilin Province Monday by merging with four other universities. The new university was set up by merging Jilin University, Jilin Polytechnical University, Changchun Science and Technology University, Changchun Post and Telecommunication University, and Dr. Norman Bethune Medical University. The university has more than 39,000 students and 15,600 faculty members. It offers 130 undergraduate courses, 180 masters degrees and 71 Ph.D. courses. Vice-premier Li Lanqing sent his congratulations via telephone. Liu Shuxin will be President of the new Jilin University. Experts noted that the merger will facilitate building a world- class university. |
