Zhejiang University announces new deans

Hu Yaoming HANGZHOU _ Academicians, leading scientists, and respected professors were appointed deans of the 11 schools of the newly merged Zhejiang University in East China's Zhejiang Province on Friday. Among the talented individuals appointed, six are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, two prestigious think tanks that enjoy worldwide reputations. Gao Shangquan, a leading mainstream economist and senior research fellow, was appointed dean of the School of Management. He graduated from the Department of Economics at Shanghai's St. John's University in 1952 and has worked for the State Council for several years. Li Guojie, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was appointed dean of the School of Information Technology and Engineering. He has been working for the Institute of Computer Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1987. The other nine deans will assume posts in the school of Education, Foreign Languages, Machinery and Energy Engineering, Architecture, Environment and Resources, Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Technology, Agriculture and Biological Technology and Pharmacology. Zhejiang University merged with three other universities based in the capital city of Zhejiang Province _ Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Medical University and Zhejiang Agricultural University _ in September 1998. After the merger, the original schools of the four universities were reorganized into the present 20. To ensure a more promising future, authorities of the university decided to invite top talents from the country's academic circles to preside over the schools of the university. |
