China Releases First Survey on Internet Resource

By April 30 this year, the registered Internet domain names on the Chinese mainland totalled 692,490, websites 238,249, web pages 159,000,000 and on-line databases 45,598.

The above information was revealed by a survey on Internet resources on the Chinese mainland, the first of its kind conducted by China.

The survey shows that websites with such domain names as "com or com.cn" account for 80.73 percent of the total, and those with "net or net.cn" ranks second with percentage of 12.69 percent. As many as 11 percent of websites with database provide paid on-line database service and 60 percent of databases contain information about certain products.

Enterprise websites account for 77.8 percent of the total while their pageview makes up 43 percent of the total. Although commercial websites merely account for 5.4 percent, their pageview makes up 29 percent of the total; institutional websites ranking second in terms of number, have their pageview lower than personal websites, merely accounting for 7.6 percent of the total, the survey says.

The pageview for commercial websites averages 5,342 pages every day, ten times that of enterprise websites and six times that of institutional websites, the survey notes.

According to the survey, 67 percent of websites were launched since 2000, and 49.2 percent of websites were set up in 2000. As many as 65 percent of websites have no more than three staff members, and 31.6 percent of websites have only one staff member each.
