SMIC Kicks off Wafer Production
2001-09-27

September 25 saw Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation  (SMIC) held an inaugural ceremony in celebration  of its formal launching of wafer production. This  celebration marks a momentous feat in developing China's  semiconductor industry since SMIC commences production  of its first eight-inch wafers at 0.25 micron and  below technology, according to today's People's Daily.

SMIC looks forward to pioneering the development  of China's integrate circuit(IC) and related up-,  mid- and down-stream industries with a vision to reduce  China's current dependence on imported semiconductor  IC(integrated circuit) chips and provide a wider  space for domestic IC design houses.

SMIC has achieved world-class technologies and  displayed China's most advanced technologies and production  capabilities.

Semiconductor IC(integrated circuit) chips as  a product, multiple semiconductor IC(integrated circuit)  chips included, is closely linked to people's everyday  life, being widely used for telecommunication, PC  and wide range of consumer goods such as DVD and VCD  players. Especially in the case of China, it is at  present having a semiconductor home market supply  less than 15% of its demand.
